Never A Day In The Gym

June 7, 2012

A porter walking out of Everest Base Camp at 5,500 meters

I took this picture of a porter carrying gas bottles out of Everest Base Camp at 5,560metres. If you went direct there now you would die because of the altitude.

He carries the gas bottles roped to his back. He does this everyday all through the climbing season. One bottle is heavy. He has four.  He was half my size.

No specialist nutrition, ever. Never a day in the gym, ever.

I watched, while gulping for air, supported by my walking poles wearing my walking boots that cost more than he makes in a year. Makes you think about what is possible, what advantage we have…
Oh, he smiled at me and wished me good day as he went past.
